Real Life Begins

In May, I finished my Master of Science in technical communication. The next day, I started my first career-track job, as a technical writer for the Division of Information Technology at the University of Missouri. I now live only about 100 miles from where I grew up, but it may as well be another country!

Transitioning from student to professional hasn't been as difficult as I imagined it to be. The most jarring change has definitely been the surge in my amount of free time. Suddenly, weekends became yawning gulfs of time for "projects," a word that previously had academic connotations, but increasingly has come to refer to hanging pictures and doing laundry. I have begun a search for freelance writing projects to do in the evenings and weekends, and my tactical offensive to rescue my social life from the Grim Reaper of academia has finally swung in my favor.
